Nigerian Ekiti State Governor’s Election

We congratulate the many electoral stakeholders for the successful conduct of the June 21 Ekiti gubernatorial election.  The Nigerian Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) oversaw a credible, efficient process, and by all accounts the result reflected the will of Ekiti’s voters.  The security forces collaborated effectively and provided a safe and secure environment free of major incidents.  The parties and their supporters acted responsibly during and after the election, and the magnanimity exhibited by all candidates afterwards speaks highly of them and the people of Ekiti.  That more than fifty percent of registered voters turned out to make their voices heard bodes well for the future of Nigeria’s democracy.

Sudan: Woman condemned to death released after international pressure

Today’s release of Meriam Yehya Ibrahim, a Christian Sudanese woman sentenced to death by hanging for ‘apostasy’ and to flogging for ‘adultery’, is a step towards undoing the horrific injustice visited on her, said Amnesty International today.

Meriam was released from Omdurman Woman’s Prison today after an appeal court found her not guilty of both charges. She is now with her husband and her two children.

“Today’s ruling is a small step to redressing the injustice done to Meriam,” said Sarah Jackson, Deputy Director at Amnesty International . “However, she should never have been prosecuted. Meriam was sentenced to death when eight months pregnant for something which should not be a crime. Furthermore, her abhorrent treatment, including being shackled, violated international human rights law against ill-treatment.”
Meriam’s case attracted more than a million Amnesty International supporters to take action calling for her immediate and unconditional release.
Nigeria Vs Argentina: Maigari wants special birthday gift

President of Nigeria Football Federation, Alhaji Aminu Maigari has charged the Super Eagles to go all out against Argentina on Wednesday and ensure a place in the 2014 FIFA World Cup’s Round of 16.

Speaking in Sao Paulo on Monday, Nigeria’s football supremo says he would be the most delighted with a favourable outcome as the match-day falls on his birthday.

“My birthday is on the day we are playing Argentina, and I would feel very special if we defeat the Argentines. But more than that, a place in the Round of 16 at this World Cup finals would bring joy to the entire NFF delegation and the good people of Nigeria back home.

BUSES DONATED BY FRIENDS OF FCT MINISTER TO BAUCHI PDP

Contrary to the insinuations in some quarters, it was the Committee of Friends of the FCT Minister, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed and not him that pulled their resources together to purchase 22nos 18-Seater buses for the Bauchi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) recently.
The Committee of Friends presented the buses to the Bauchi State Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Ibrahim Yaro Yaro in Bauchi two weeks ago at a time when the FCT Minister was far away in Brazil as part of the Federal Government’s delegation led by the Senate President, Senator David Mark to the opening of the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
